What a perfect Saturday! The sun is shining and I have spent the day in Ancoats at john Brewer’s studio. Lucky for us he offered a small group a taster session to see if we would be interested in one of his two day courses. I new from the second I walked into his studio that the answer was, yes I do! A studio full of antique, Victorian lenses, large format and medium format cameras and a darkroom…. i love it!
John showed us some of his prints and took some portraits of us with his large format camera. We then used the wet-collodion process in the darkroom. If I am honest a lot of what John did was a little too advanced for me, but i guess that is the point. It is just a sample session, we will learn the process in more detail on one of his courses. John also took us through a three colour gum bichromate process which was pretty spectacular to watch and amazing that it can be done in daylight. I loved the atmosphere in John’s studio and the feeling that if you are interested enough and passionate enough then you can achieve pretty much anything. There are no real boundaries in photography and meeting someone like John, that breaks all the rules, has been a real eye opener. I look forward to attending one of his courses in January 2013.
